Terán,Guillermo E.; Butí,Cristina I.; Mirande,J. Marcos.
ABSTRACT A new species of Astyanax is described from the arheic system of Río Sucuma, in Catamarca, Northwestern Argentina. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of characters including the presence of a broad vertical humeral spot, absence of maxillary teeth, and absence of circuli in posterior field of scales. Furthermore, this species is distinguished by the orbital diameter, head length, branched anal-fin rays, perforated lateral-line scales, transverse scales, dentary teeth with abrupt decrease in size. This species is, to date, the single known fish endemic of Río Sucuma basin.

A new species of dwarf sea bass, genus Serranus (Serranidae: Actinopterygii), from the southwestern Atlantic Ocean Neotropical Ichthyology
Carvalho Filho,Alfredo; Ferreira,Carlos Eduardo Leite.
Serranus aliceae n. sp. is described from Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo States, southeastern Brazilian coast. The species is readily distinguished from its congeners by the following combination of characters: scales around the caudal peduncle 20 or 21; total gill rakers on first branchial arch 23-29; cheek-scales rows 5 or 6; and by the coloration of live specimens, which are reddish with a broad, conspicuous, white stripe from post-orbital region to the caudal-fin base and a white abdomen. The new species apparently inhabits the deeper (30 or more meters) portions of reef environments along the subtropical Brazilian coast, and is possibly associated with upwelling cold-water masses. The species was observed hovering above rocky bottoms, feeding on...

Asymbiotic germination in three Chloraea species (Orchidaceae) from Chile Gayana Botánica
PEREIRA,GUILLERMO; ALBORNOZ,VERÓNICA; ROMERO,CHRISTIAN; LARA,SEBASTIÁN; SÁNCHEZ-OLATE,MANUEL; RÍOS,DARCY; ATALA,CRISTIAN.
ABSTRACT Orchids require symbiotic fungi and/or specific conditions to germinate. Asymbiotic techniques have been shown successful for orchid germination. In Chile, Chloraea include many endemic, and potentially ornamental, terrestrial orchid species. In this study, individuals of Chloraea crispa, C. gavilu and C. virescens were manually autopollinated. The resulting capsules were sterilized and seeds were aseptically obtained. We evaluated asymbiotic germination in: Agar Water (AW), Knudson C (KC), Banana Culture Media (CMB), Tomato Culture Media (CMT), Malmgren Modified (MM), Murashige and Skoog (MS), and MS modified (MS1/2). Seeds were incubated in the dark at 24±1 ºC for 2 weeks. Then they were put in 16/8 h light/dark cycles for 14 weeks. We...

Birds from cerradão woodland, an overlooked forest of the Cerrado region, Brazil Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Cavarzere,Vagner; Moraes,Gabriel Parmezani; Dalbeto,Andreli Cristina; Maciel,Fernanda de Góes; Donatelli,Reginaldo José.
The Cerrado region still receives relatively little ornithological attention, although it is regarded as the only tropical savanna in the world considered to be a biodiversity hotspot. Cerradão is one of the least known and most deforested Cerrado physiognomies and few recent bird surveys have been conducted in these forests. In order to rescue bird records and complement the few existing inventories of this under-studied forest type in the state of São Paulo, we looked for published papers on birds of cerradão. Additionally we surveyed birds at a 314-ha cerradão remnant located in central São Paulo, Brazil, from September 2005-December 2006 using unlimited distance transect counts. Out of 95 investigations involving cerradão bird studies, only 17 (18%)...

Breeding system of Embothrium coccineum (Proteaceae) in two populations on different slopes of the Andes RChHN
ROVERE,ADRIANA E; SMITH-RAMÍREZ,CECILIA; ARMESTO,JUAN J; PREMOLI,ANDREA C.
Plant breeding systems are considered to reflect species' life history characteristics, selection due to biotic or abiotic factors, pollination conditions, or a combination of these. Reproductive systems may vary over ecological gradients. The breeding system of the ornithophilous Embothrium coccineum (Proteaceae) from temperate South America was studied by pollination treatments: manual self-pollination, manual cross-pollination, automatic self-pollination, and natural pollination. These treatments were conducted in a coastal western and an Andean eastern population. Embothrium coccineum was found to be self-incompatible and highly dependent on the pollinating agent at both sites. However, pollen limitations were greater in the coastal population, as...

Coleus namuliensis and Coleus caudatus (Lamiaceae):a new species and a new combination in the Afromontane flora of Mozambique and Zimbabwe Naturalis
Downes, E.; Darbyshire, I..
The new species Coleus namuliensis (Lamiaceae) is described from the granite outcrops and grasslands of Mt Namuli in Zambezia Province of Mozambique. It has previously been confused with Plectranthus caudatus, a species that is restricted to the quartzite outcrops of the Chimanimani Mountains on the Mozambique-Zimbabwe border for which the new combination in Coleus is formalised in this paper. Other potential confusion species are discussed and a rationale for applying the generic name Coleus rather than Plectranthus is provided. Despite their highly restricted ranges, C. namuliensis and C. caudatus are both considered to have a conservation status of Least Concern at present, although climate change may pose a longer-term threat to their survival.

Eastern Africa Coastal Forest Programme OceanDocs
Younge, A..
The eastern African coastal forest ecoregion is recognised as one of Africa’s centres of species endemism, and is distributed over six countries (Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi). Most is found in Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique, which form our focal region. The coastal forests are fragmented, small and surrounded by poor communities that have a high demand for land and forest resources. Although coastal forests have significant cultural and traditional values for local communities, they do not receive adequate support from the relevant government authorities and international conservation institutions. WWF has over 10 years research and conservation experience on the eastern Africa coastal forests in Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique...

Effects of physical mixing on the environment of satellite lakes and dams of lake Victoria, Kenya OceanDocs
Guya, F.; Wakwabi, E.; Jembe, T.; Osumo, W.; Sitoki, L.; Ogutu, Z..
In the Lake Victoria (Kenya) catchment are found several small lakes and dams. The satellite lakes and dams are important aquifers and buffer zones for the lake. Besides the water bodies are important water sources both for livestock and domestic use. A study conducted in the water bodies between January 2003 and December 2004 showed that effects of eutrophication are wide spread in the lakes and dams. An investigation of primary productivity and effects of physical mixing and material transport was done. In Lake Sare, Lake Victoria waters are transported to the satellite lake during both day and night through Goye causeway that connects the two. The water bodies have higher rates of primary productivity than Lake Victoria. Spatial extent of oxygen...

Impacts of Population and Income Growth Rates on Threatened Mammals and Birds AgEcon
Pandit, Ram; Laband, David N..
Per capita income and human population levels in a country have direct influences on its environmental outcomes. Countries with same level of income may have different rate of income growth and vice versa, suggesting that the influence of the rate of income growth on environmental outcomes could be different than that of income level. Similarly, the rate of population growth might have different impact in addition to the impacts of sheer number of population. We explore this empirical question using country-level data on threatened species published by IUCN for the year 2007. Controlling for other factors, our model estimates the influences of the rate of population and income growth on threatened mammals and birds across 113 continental countries. The...

In vitro establishment and multiplication of the Normania triphylla (Lowe) Lowe BABT
Delmail,David; Labrousse,Pascal; Lesouëf,Jean-Yves; Le Hir,François; Autret,Jean-Luc; Botineau,Michel.
Normania triphylla is an endemic species from Madeira island (Portugal) extinct in the wild since 1991. The aim of this work was to culture the meristems of this species in vitro and to multiply its shoots in order to preserve this endangered species. The best results in terms of multiplication were obtained in Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with 10 µM 6‑benzylaminopurine (BAP). The number of shoots, the number of nodes and the number of leaves were the most important in this medium. However, the best results concerning the total shoot length were obtained when BAP was not supplemented into the medium and in the presence of 5 or 7.5 µM 1-naphtalene acetic acid (NAA). This is the first report on the in vitro culture of N. triphylla which could...

Plant species and habitat structure in a sand dune field in the brazilian Caatinga: a homogeneous habitat harbouring an endemic biota Rev. Bras. Bot.
Rocha,Pedro Luís B. da; Queiroz,Luciano P. de; Pirani,José Rubens.
One dune habitat in the semi-arid Caatinga Biome, rich in endemisms, is described based on plant species composition, woody plant density, mean height and phenology and a multivariate analysis of the micro-habitats generated by variables associated to plants and topography. The local flora is composed mainly by typically sand-dweller species of Caatinga, suggesting the existence of a phytogeographic unity related to the sandy areas in the Caatinga biome, which seems to be corroborated by faunal distribution. Moreover, some species are probably endemic from the dunes, a pattern also found in vertebrates. The plant distribution is patchy, there is no conspicuous herbaceous layer and almost 50% of the ground represents exposed sand. Phenology is not...

Reproductive biology of a highly endemic species: Cipocereus laniflorus N.P. Taylor & Zappi (Cactaceae) Acta Botanica
Rego,Juliana Ordones; Franceschinelli,Edivani Villaron; Zappi,Daniela Cristina.
Cipocereus laniflorus N.P. Taylor & Zappi is an endemic species from the Serra do Caraça, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. In order to propose conservation strategies for this species, its reproductive strategies were investigated, including reproductive phenology, floral biology, floral visitors and breeding system. The flowering and fruiting period extends from May to October. Few flowers per plant open each night, producing up to 0.4 ml nectar, but 30% of them are nectarless. Probably pollen is also offered as a resource. Fruiting efficiency of C. laniflorus (47%) is close to that found in other Cactaceae species. Pollen of this species was detected in Anoura geoffroy, Soricina glossophaga and Pygoderma bilabiatum bats. Amongst the characteristics...

Structure of understory bird communities in Atlantic Forest Remnants in Northeastern Brazil Biological Sciences
Melo, Daniela de Carvalho; Ferreira, Alvino Pedrosa; Loures Ribeiro, Alan.
The Atlantic Forest in the State of Paraíba integrates the Pernambuco Center of Endemism. The present work investigated understory bird communities of three of its remnants using ten mist nets installed at eight different points of the forest understory of each area. We captured 333 birds of 44 species and 19 families. Bird richness and abundance did not differ between the three remnants (KW = 6.08; p = 0.04 and KW = 10.54; p = 0.004). The composition was little similar among them, and each area presented high species diversity and evenness. The most captured species were Arremon taciturnus (n = 40), Chiroxiphia pareola (n = 32) and Conopophaga melanops (n = 28). C. melanops has a local threat status of “vulnerable” and is considered endemic. Endangered...

The Chaenopsine blennies of the Southwestern Caribbean (Pisces: Clinidae: Chaenopsinae) I. Systematic analysis of zoogeography OceanDocs
Acero-P., A..
The chaenopsine blennies are an homogeneous group which may be considered a subfamily of the Clinidae, since the existing evidence is not enough to give them familial status. The subfamily includes eight genera: Mccoskerichthys, Coralliozetus, Acanthemblemaria, Ekemblemaria, Emblemaria, Hemiemblemaria, Lucayablennius, and Chaenopsis. The nominal genera Protemblemaria and Emblemariopsis are herewith considered synonyms of Coralliozetus, since they share two derived characters: small size and sexual dimorphism in the color of the head, and are rather similar in several other characteristics. The división of the West Indian Zoogeographical Province made by Briggs (1974) is unnatural, since the fish fauna of Belize, Florida and the Bahamas is very similar. I...
